Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a specialized medical procedure performed by Dr. Nirmala Murthy to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva for signs of abnormal cells or lesions. It is typically recommended when there are abnormal results from cervical cancer screening tests such as Pap smears or HPV tests, or when there are symptoms suggestive of cervical, vaginal, or vulvar abnormalities.

Colposcopy

Key Aspects of Colposcopy with Dr. Nirmala Murthy:

  1. Procedure Overview: During a colposcopy, Dr. Murthy uses a colposcope, which is a magnifying instrument with a light source, to examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva in detail. The procedure is usually performed in an office setting and does not require anesthesia.
  2. Indications for Colposcopy: Colposcopy may be recommended if there are abnormal findings on cervical cancer screening tests, such as abnormal Pap smear results or positive HPV tests. It may also be indicated if there are symptoms such as vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, or genital warts.
  3. Evaluation of Abnormalities: Dr. Nirmala Murthy carefully examines the cervix, vagina, and vulva for any abnormal changes, such as areas of abnormal tissue, inflammation, or lesions. The colposcope magnifies the view, allowing for a detailed assessment of the tissues.
  4. Biopsy Procedure: If abnormal areas are identified during colposcopy, Dr. Murthy may perform a biopsy, which involves removing a small sample of tissue for further examination under a microscope. This allows for a definitive diagnosis of any precancerous or cancerous changes.
  5. Treatment Options: Depending on the results of the colposcopy and biopsy, Dr. Nirmala Murthy may recommend further treatment to remove or treat abnormal cells or lesions. This may include procedures such as loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP), cryotherapy, laser therapy, or surgical excision.
  6. Patient Counseling and Support: Dr. Murthy provides comprehensive counseling and support to patients undergoing colposcopy, explaining the procedure, discussing findings, and addressing any concerns or questions. She ensures that patients feel comfortable and informed throughout the process.
