Vulvoscopy

Vulvoscopy, also known as vulvar colposcopy, is a specialized procedure performed by Dr. Nirmala Murthy to examine the vulva, which is the external genitalia of the female reproductive system. It is a diagnostic tool used to visualize and evaluate any abnormalities or changes in the vulvar tissue, similar to how colposcopy is used to examine the cervix.

Vulvoscopy

Key Aspects of Vulvoscopy with Dr. Nirmala Murthy:

  1. Indications: Vulvoscopy may be recommended when there are symptoms or findings suggestive of vulvar abnormalities, such as itching, burning, pain, redness, swelling, or visible lesions. It is also used to further evaluate abnormalities detected on pelvic exams or other diagnostic tests.
  2. Procedure: During a vulvoscopy, Dr. Murthy uses a colposcope, a magnifying instrument with a light source, to examine the vulvar tissue in detail. The procedure is typically performed in an office setting and does not usually require anesthesia. The colposcope allows for enhanced visualization of the vulvar surface, allowing Dr. Murthy to identify any abnormal areas or lesions.
  3. Evaluation of Abnormalities: Dr. Nirmala Murthy carefully examines the vulvar tissue for any abnormalities, such as lesions, ulcers, warts, or areas of discoloration. She may use various techniques, such as applying acetic acid (similar to the vinegar used in cervical colposcopy) or using special filters on the colposcope, to enhance visualization of abnormal areas.
  4. Biopsy Procedure: If abnormal areas are identified during vulvoscopy, Dr. Murthy may perform a biopsy, which involves removing a small sample of tissue from the affected area for further examination under a microscope. This allows for a definitive diagnosis of any precancerous or cancerous changes in the vulvar tissue.
  5. Treatment Options: Depending on the results of the vulvoscopy and biopsy, Dr. Nirmala Murthy may recommend further treatment to remove or treat abnormal vulvar tissue. Treatment options may include topical medications, cryotherapy (freezing), laser therapy, or surgical excision, depending on the nature and severity of the abnormalities.

Benefits of Vulvoscopy with Dr. Nirmala Murthy:

  • Accurate diagnosis of vulvar abnormalities and conditions affecting the vulvar tissue.
