Loop Excision Procedures

Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP), also known as large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ), is a common surgical procedure performed by Dr. Nirmala Murthy to remove abnormal cervical tissue, particularly in cases of cervical dysplasia or precancerous changes. LEEP is a minimally invasive procedure that involves using a thin wire loop heated by an electrical current to remove the abnormal tissue from the cervix.

Loop Excision Procedures

Key Aspects of Loop Excision Procedures by Dr. Nirmala Murthy:

  1. Indications: LEEP is typically recommended when abnormal cells are detected on cervical cancer screening tests such as Pap smears or colposcopy. These abnormalities may indicate cervical dysplasia, which can progress to cervical cancer if left untreated.
  2. Diagnostic Evaluation: Prior to performing LEEP, Dr. Murthy conducts a thorough evaluation, which may include a colposcopy examination and cervical biopsy to confirm the presence and extent of abnormal cervical tissue.
  3. Procedure: During the LEEP procedure, Dr. Nirmala Murthy uses a speculum to visualize the cervix and applies a local anesthetic to numb the area. A thin wire loop electrode, attached to an electrosurgical generator, is then used to remove the abnormal tissue from the transformation zone of the cervix. The electrical current cauterizes the tissue as it is removed, minimizing bleeding and reducing the risk of complications.
  4. Specimen Removal: After the abnormal tissue is excised, it is sent to a pathology laboratory for further examination to confirm the diagnosis and assess the margins of the tissue removed.
  5. Recovery: LEEP is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to return home the same day. Mild cramping and vaginal discharge are common after the procedure, and Dr. Murthy provides instructions for postoperative care and symptom management.
  6. Follow-up: Following LEEP, Dr. Nirmala Murthy schedules regular follow-up appointments to monitor healing and assess for recurrence of abnormal cervical tissue. Additional cervical cancer screening tests may be recommended in the future to ensure continued surveillance of cervical health.
